Children with limited English skills are one of the fastest growing school-aged populations in the United States. Unfortunately, they are also one of the furthest behind academically. This study examines the impact of instructional practices reflecting cultural competence on the achievement of English Language Learners in reading. The study also aims to promote "best practice" for student groups that are farthest from meeting standards. The results of this study support the use of cultural instructional strategies to improve academic achievement of English Language Learners as culturally responsive and standards based teaching are interwoven into classroom practices.
