Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2013.
This clinical dissertation examines factors associated with well-being in retirement. A critical review of the literature about the well-being of retirees showed that existing studies have employed disparate criterion variables and theoretical approaches. The "PERMA" model of well-being promulgated by Martin Seligman, Ph.D. was used as a framework to organize the research findings, supplemented with an examination of the association of health and financial factors to well-being. Gender differences in factors affecting well-being were examined. Implications of the research for mental health practitioners and selected interventions were discussed. Field interviews with experts in the clinical treatment of retirees and older adults augmented findings from the research literature. The objective of this dissertation was to increase the knowledge and skill of mental health professionals regarding the well-being of retirees, which was undertaken by formulating a presentation that was provided to mental health professionals. Limitations of this dissertation as well as recommendations for future areas of study are considered.
