The simplified Conjoint-recognition paradigm provided direct estimate of the processes contribution to false memory. The current study assessed the differences in process contribution to false memory over two delay conditions (48-hours and 1-week). The effect of delay on false memory persisted over veridical memory, supporting the study's hypothesis. Veridical memory faded in a liner fashion over one week. Surprisingly, false memory rates displayed a temporary increase after a 48-hour delay, followed by a gradual decline until 1-week post study. Furthermore, false memory tended to rely on familiarity processes over phantom recollection initially. However, after a Short Delay, reliance on phantom recollection increased, followed by a drop in its contribution at 1-week. While past studies report the effects of time on false memory over one week, the current study suggests that changes in process reliance after a Short Delay maintain, or slightly increase, false memory rates.
