This study examined the consistency between the national Uniform Crime Report (UCR) statistics of juvenile offenders collected by the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and public perception of such offenders dependent on crime, race, and sex. A sample of 276 participants were solicited from across the U.S. to participate in an online survey in which they were asked to choose which of four pictured offenders was most likely to have been arrested for a specific criminal offense. Results of the participant survey indicated biases towards one of the four pictured juvenile offenders for 16 of the 31 criminal offenses. In addition, significant effects were found for 54 of the 62 analyses comparing the data to the UCR statistics based on sex and race, suggesting that public perception of such offenders is not consistent with national juvenile offender statistics. This skew in perception may be caused by such factors as media, stereotyping, legal system policies, and/or personal discrimination. Further, this study explores these factors and the societal and legal implications resulting from these noted biases.
