For the last 25 years, have designers and environmental lobbyists been tackling the issue of consumer packaging waste and its environmental impacts on discard. During this time-span many packaging protocols such as Germany's 'Green-Dot' packaging protocol have been developed to regulate and help diminish the environmental impacts of packaging materials and the waste generated throughout their lifecycles. Along with these protocols, legislation and the application of eco-efficient solutions, some countries have somewhat managed to make some progress towards sustainable improvements for consumer packaging. However, landfill statistics have shown that these initiatives have had little overall effect, as the amount of consumer packaging waste per capita in Canada steadily rises every year.

Consumer electronics packaging is one such field, and is one of the most challenging of all the consumer packaging categories, as the demands of both environmental and marketing requirements consistently contradict each other. This research study will investigate this disparity and will propose a list of design recommendations in which packaging attributes can be used to develop sustainable packaging practices and recommend ways in which designers and consumers can ensure the success of sustainable packaging practices.
