This study directs attention to non-traditional students during their first year of college with its focus on non-traditional students' understanding about their experiences in higher education institutions. This qualitative case study methodology explores non-traditional students' understanding about their experiences in a rural county college. Data collections sources were comprised of one to one interviews with each of the participants, field notes from participants' interviews, and focus group sessions. This study sheds light on the challenges of non-traditional students in their personal lives and in the college environment, as most of the non-traditional students spend their evenings and after work hours at their respective college or university, challenges presenting continuous factors for their anxiety as students of higher education. Furthermore, the researcher also found that non-traditional students' motivation for higher learning does not diminish despite their colossal impediments. Their personal desires and demands of a knowledge- based economy have thrust individual workers into an environment of continuous educational achievements for their financial and professional sustainability. Another finding is that institutions for higher learning need to address the needs of non-traditional students as well as make modifications to create an equal environment of resources for them. In addition to disparities in practices, the researcher also learned that although government policies have provided ways to improve participation for non-traditional students, academia needs to constantly re-invent itself as new technologies are demanding for its students to re-invent themselves.
