Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Houston, 2012.
Carlos Guastavino (1912-2000) is one of the most important composers in South America, and he is considered one of the greatest exponents of Argentinean Musical Nationalism. Guastavino's Sonata para Clarinete y Piano offers an important example of the composer's use of nationalistic musical idioms. This document examines the Argentine folk music influence in the Clarinet Sonata, and explains how Guastavino was able to blend native musical elements with those of classical music, preserving a normative sonata design. He achieved a fresh neo-romantic nationalistic style which expresses the "nostalgia" sentiment of the Argentinean people.

The first chapter of this document discusses Guastavino's life and personality, musical output, musical style, and explores the rise and fall of the nationalistic movement in Argentina. The music from Argentina---its dances, rhythms, and lyrical genres---always provided Guastavino with great inspiration and served as models for his own compositions. Thus, the second chapter assesses the Argentine folk music influence in the Clarinet Sonata, especially from the tonada genre, and explains how Guastavino was able to internalize the traditional music of his homeland. Lastly, the third chapter of this document includes the background of the sonata, and offers a stylistic and formal analysis of the piece, which studies the treatment of the clarinet line, the structure of the work, the rhythmical relationship between melody and accompaniment, tonality and modality, and its distinctive harmonic language. Guastavino's Clarinet Sonata is an engaging work and represents an important addition to the clarinet literature.
