Non-native species introductions have been associated with ecological and economic damage in invaded habitats. An understanding of the traits of successful non-native species may help predict which introduced species will become invasive. In this study, the ecological and life history traits of freshwater fishes in the Hudson River Watershed were examined to determine whether geographic origin, climate of origin, trophic status, parental care, maximum fecundity, adult maximum size, and latitude range differed between native and non-native species. Native and non-native species differed only in climate of origin with more non-natives from subtropical ranges. This may indicate that rising water temperatures associated with global warming will allow for more subtropical species to invade the temperate Hudson River Watershed. This study indicates that non-native species with traits most similar to native species have been most successful when invading new habitats.
