This dissertation demonstrates a process of interpreting Greek vase iconography, which reorients the way we view the conventional pictorial motifs that comprise Athenian vase-painting. I begin with the premise that time as an abstract governing force was an omnipresent concept in Greek culture, and that evidence for a cultural consciousness of time runs through all genres of ancient literature. I propose that if we expand the analytical framework for vase-imagery that we might find such an awareness of time embedded within the vase-paintings as well. I demonstrate that the indication of time of day or year was integral to the narrative structure of specific themes portrayed on vases. In this study vase imagery is examined in conjunction with the written evidence to reconstruct not only the ancient Greek experience of time, but also the broader cultural context and intellectual background of sixth-fifth century Athens. This two-pronged approach to the images clarifies the significance of certain multivalent pictorial motifs and then reveals the meaning of the vase-paintings in which they appear. The visual formulas of seven subjects act as test cases to explore both the narrative and connotative role of time of day and/or season in Athenian vase-painting, and how the idea of daily and seasonal time was evoked. By methodically examining potential indices of time of day and year within religious, cultural, and purely visual formal contexts this study reveals the semiotic and narrative potential that the concept of time brings to the language of vase-imagery.
