The study examined the relationship between family functioning, level of coping and the moderating effect of coping on family functioning and on family quality of life outcomes in African American families raising a child with a disability. The study hypothesized that high levels of family functioning and positive levels of coping would increase quality of life and coping had a moderating effect on family functioning on quality of life. Using convenience sampling, the study surveyed 123 families of children birth to 21 years old with developmental disabilities from two hospitals in Washington, DC using a quantitative cross-sectional design. Bivariate statistics (Pearson r) were used to test whether there was a statistically significant relationship between the variables, family functioning and quality of life and coping on quality of life. Multivariate analysis (multiple regression) was conducted to examine the relationships between the independent variables, on the dependent variable, family quality, after controlling for the effect of the respondents (family income, whether child has an intellectual disability, and whether child has traumatic brain injury). The findings revealed statistically significant positive relationships between quality of family life and the three indicators of family functioning: family identity, coping resources and information sharing. Findings at the multivariate regression level suggest that some of the observed effects of some of the indicators of family functioning may be due to random or chance factors. However, when the effects of the covariates of income, child's intellectual disability, traumatic brain injury and the moderator variable coping were statistically controlled, the only remaining significant relationship between family functioning and family quality of life was the relationship with information sharing. The results indicate that social work practitioners, policy makers and researchers need to focus not only on the needs of the child, but on how the child impacts the family system. In this regard, they should consider how the identity of the family is impacted, the importance of information sharing and the resources they require to cope. In addition, attention should be geared toward the impact of income on the family and how having a child with intellectual disability and traumatic brain injury affects the family, as opposed to other types of disabilities.
