The eighteenth century saw a rise in the leisure class and traveling. The Grand Tour offered men and women a change to experience new cultures and then take pride in being English. Travelers acquired knowledge of fashion, language, art, architecture, and more during the Grand Tour and brought this knowledge back to England. Jane Austen uses a miniaturized version of the Grand Tour with her heroines in Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and Pride and Prejudice to help her heroines mature into womanhood and better understand their place in eighteenth-century English society. Elinor and Marianne Dashwood travel to London and Cleveland to observe the different social circles and behaviors of those living in town and in the country. Catherine Morland travels on a tour similar to that of an Italian Tour. She spends a season in Bath, and then she travels to Northanger Abbey with her new friends, the Tilneys. Her miniature tour brings her out of the fantasy world of Gothic novels and into reality of the English countryside. And Elizabeth Bennet takes two tours. She travels to Hunsford to visit her friend Charlotte, and then later travels to Derbyshire with her aunt and uncle. Each tour takes her further away from her own social circle at Longbourn and closer to Mr. Darcy's social sphere where she is able to learn more about the man she has misjudged. By the end of each novel, each heroine has completed her miniature tour and understands the role she is to take in English society.
