Thesis (M.S.)--University of Wyoming, 2012.
Agent Orange defoliant used in Vietnam by the U.S. from 1961--1971 was contaminated with dioxin. The Vietnamese Government and others have identified at least three major dioxin "hot spots" due to Agent Orange spillage at former U.S. military bases. Studies at Da Nang and Bien Hoa since 2005 found very high dioxin concentrations in soils, sediments, fish, human blood and breast milk, with concentrations in all media exceeding international standards. Based on measurements of blood dioxin and results of epidemiological surveys conducted at Da Nang and Bien Hoa by Hatfield Consultants and Office 33 (2009; 2011), I used multiple linear regression to assess importance of demographic, lifestyle and dietary risk factors contributing to blood dioxin levels. Important factors assessed included age, living or working at the contaminated sites, consumption of contaminated foods and lifestyle factors. Findings suggest the need for a follow-up risk assessment for residents living on or near these dioxin-contaminated "hot spots.".
