This dissertation studies Luso-Brazilian businessmen during the Brazilian gold rush by using the Portuguese family firm headed by Francisco Pinheiro (1668-1749) as a case study. It examines Pinheiro's business activities in Lisbon and in Brazil during the first half of the eighteenth century giving particular attention to his firm's colonial headquarters in Rio de Janeiro. Pinheiro's social background and business activities were compared with other Luso-Brazilian businessmen and found to be representative of his era. The history of the firm's activities in Atlantic commerce suggests that traditional images of Luso-Brazilian merchants as undercapitalized backward businessmen who held little active commerce in their own hands, and who were highly dependent upon foreigners, is in need of substantial revision. The activities of Pinheiro, his partners, and agents, reveal a prominent degree of entrepreneurial talent. Successful Luso-Brazilian merchants employed the same management skills as their foreign competitors. They sold goods on their own account, bought and outfitted ships, and invested in whatever commercial financial areas that were open to them.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The greatest problems Pinheiro and other merchants faced came not from foreign competitors, but government regulation. Crown policy hampered businessmen by limiting their areas of investment, creating economically damaging monopolies, and regulating trade through the fleet system. Merchants such as Pinheiro were prohibited from founding banks, forming insurance companies, or creating independent joint stock companies. The result was that, although the successful merchants became rich, they had few options in the area of pure financial investment. The fleet system made colonial commerce extremely speculative, upset supply and demand mechanisms, and raised information costs. Lack of political power made it impossible for merchants to effectively challenge royal regulations.

Pinheiro's activities typified the strategies merchants employed to do business in that environment. His approach was to limit risks by spreading investments, doing business with relatives and secure individuals, and trying to gain personal influence with royal officials. The greatest problems in his business came from relatives' lack of business ability, and his querulous personality. Like so many early modern businessmen, his death signalled the end of his business.
