Thesis (Psy.D.)--The University of the Rockies, 2013.
While numerous theories in organizational psychology have addressed several aspects of motivation, none have integrated most of the crucial elements into one clearly defined process to improve attitude, motivation, performance, leadership effectiveness and output (sales). A unique approach that integrates these elements is presented here, the RADAR process (Roadmap, Action, Drive, Anchor, and Results). It is a team-focused method that provides a way to define goals clearly, put in place a plan to develop and execute actions, and receive constant feedback to allow team members to adapt continually to dynamic requirements for goal achievements. The RADAR process is designed to be applied in any team-oriented setting (e.g., sales, engineering, sports, retail, management teams, etc.) with small groups that are no larger than 15 members.

The process starts by developing a common goal; identifying actionable steps; creating instant feedback via a scoreboard; having weekly meetings; and periodically reviewing results. All of these elements give a framework for a change in motivation, attitude, and achievement goal. The following dissertation outlines a quantitative quasi-experimental study that implemented the RADAR process and tested its efficacy within a typical business sector (the grocery retail market). The RADAR process was implemented in a business with two separate locations to provide one control and one experimental group for comparison of outcomes. Teams were randomly selected, and one received the RADAR process training, while the control group followed their regular work process. The specific items that were measured were motivation, attitude, performance, and leadership effectiveness (via self-report survey responses), along with performance indicators (the scoreboard and the output of organizational goals).

The hypothesis expected to be supported was that the team that implemented the RADAR process would show a significant improvement in: (a) attitude (with a change to more positive responses), (b) motivation (based on increases in commitment on the completion of actions that would impact the output of a goal), (c) performance (achievement of the goal) and (d) leadership effectiveness. The RADAR process was meant to be a single-methodological package that incorporated multiple dimensions of motivation for continuous and sustained growth, not just a one-time fix to address a single problem. The main implication of this research, with the expected empirical support from this study, was that this method would be established as a reliable, evidence-based practice to improve motivation, attitude, performance in the workplace, and leadership effectiveness.

The results of the study revealed the RADAR group showed significant improvement in attitude, thus supporting one of the stated hypotheses. However, motivation, performance, and leadership effectiveness when in the RADAR group, as compared to the control group, did not show any significant changes in the interaction over time, or within groups. Future research is recommended to further test the process's effectiveness.
