Faced with the lack of formal employment, microentrepreneurship is a common activity among women in developing countries. While microentrepreneurship is often seen as a vehicle for these women to "succeed," the asset structure conditions the degree of "success." Even when human capital is abundant in many developing countries, other assets need to concur to make microenterprises viable. This is the case of Haiti, a country where women represent 70 percent of the informal market. Nevertheless, most of these women have to rely on degraded natural resources, poor infrastructure, and an insecure environment, often impacted by natural disasters. In this study, conducted in Jacmel, Haiti, I found that when confronted with these challenges, some female microentrepreneurs are overwhelmed and become incapable of continuing their endeavors, while other are able to cope and even thrive, making microenterprise an inspiration for others in their families and their communities. The analysis of the asset structure allowed for the development of a typology of female microentrepeneurs, which resulted in three distinct types: The Surviving, The Aspiring, and The Inspiring.
