Social enterprise refers to those activities that benefit the social good based on entrepreneurial methods. This research was motived by the question: Is there a difference in sustainability between type of funding source with a social enterprise and type of funding source without social enterprise? A hypothesis that social enterprise can alleviate risk from budget cuts suggested a comparative examination. A quasi-experiment into how types of funding source operate, in terms of sustainability, was best to answer the research question. Review of the literature found an emergent need for social enterprise, and the literature suggested that types of funding sources that are nonprofits should pursue social enterprise despite a lack of empirical evidence of support. Social enterprise is viewed as having a libertarian perspective. The review also suggested a history of nonprofit social enterprise to be mutually beneficial for those types of funding sources that choose to participate. An examination of mutual advantage found continued usage of the concept by way of the Limited Liability Partnership Company concept. Qualitative research also supported social enterprise as a method to achieve sustainability. A theory of sustainability provided the basis for an instrument to examine types of funding source. The Program Sustainability Index was used to measure sustainability. Results suggested type of funding source with social enterprise was significantly sustainable. In addition, additional revenue, L3C awareness and altruism motive was significant. The major contributions this study claims include the first empirical support from a quasi-experiment that social enterprise improves sustainability of nonprofits, the verification of the Program Sustainability Index and the StrahanGerbasis Social Desirability Scale, and identifying how type of funding source that are non-secular achieved better outcomes. Implications of findings are discussed.
