The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological research was to explore the lived experiences of entrepreneurs in the United States and China, in particular the challenges, barriers, and stress points experienced by entrepreneurs. The problem was a lack of understanding of entrepreneurial challenges in the United States and in China. The data collection strategy was semistructured qualitative interviews in person or via telephone using open-ended questions. These data were coded to identify themes. The findings of the study confirmed six and refuted five of the 15 purported variables of the existing literation associated with business failure. The American entrepreneurs reported their journey as marked with challenges and stress, but despite adversity they appeared content that they embarked on such an endeavor. The major challenges and stressors found within the American sample related to funding; government policy and law; market strategy and promotion; and innovation, flexibility, and creativity. The majority of the Chinese sample expressed substantial stress as a result of their entrepreneurial journey. This stress, along with the sacrifice to physical health and family, was reported in spite of the amount of success experienced or the entrepreneur's experience in terms of knowledge and prior work achievements. The major challenges and stressors found within the Chinese sample related to funding, government policy and law, and the economy. The research study fills a gap in the literature pertaining to understanding the challenges and stress points of entrepreneurs from the lived experiences of the individuals in contrast to theory or assumptions.
