Continuing pressure on nonprofit organizational leadership to develop strategies to sustain their capacity to serve their constituents is driving management towards increasingly business-like approaches and models. The Social Franchise is an emerging construct whereby nonprofit organizations engage the franchise model in support of their mission through the generation of net income, the creation of meaningful employment opportunities for the populations they serve, and elevating awareness for their primary mission in their community. As leaders from the nonprofit sector continue to be attracted to the franchise model, which expose their organizations to new and potentially pernicious outcomes, there are critical issues that management should consider in their quest to extract benefit. The naturally occurring tension between the societal mission of a nonprofit organization and the decidedly profit orientation of a franchise create competing objectives requiring new approaches to achieve "both". These elements are effectively expanding the requisite capabilities of nonprofit management and this paper seeks to develop a clearer understanding of those issues and to provide the foundation for evolving theories and practices to address them.
