Thesis (Ph.D.)--George Mason University, 2012.
This research focuses on business formation and small business strategy in the informal economy. More specifically, it addresses three essential questions related to unregistered firms: why they are created, how they achieve results, and where they locate. This research uses a variety of methodologies, specific to each research question: microsimulation modeling, logit models, a linearized Poisson regression, and a modified version of Multi-Sector Analysis. The main dataset used for empirical evidence is from a survey of 2,000 unregistered small businesses in the Lagos Metropolitan Area, Nigeria, conducted between 2004 and 2005.
