The dissertation study investigated how two aspects of psychological distance interact when an individual makes a decision about a future event. The study developed based on prior research on construal level theory, proposing that mental representations differ based on the individual's psychological distance from the real world event. The dissertation begins by describing the background of the problem, leading up to a statement of the research problem. A definition of the research problem shows a lack of existing information regarding the development of mental construals when information is available on two separate dimensions of psychological distance. The research design is a 2x2x2 factorial ANOVA that considers both individual and interaction effects of construal level (high and low), temporal distance (near and far), and social distance (near and far) on an individual's rating score of likelihood to participate in a study group. A thorough review of previous literature provides support for the dissertation study, due a need to investigate the interaction between the different spectrums of psychological distance. The study gathered data from 128 college students and randomly assigned each of them to one of eight groups. The researcher conducted a 2x2x2 factorial ANOVA to determine whether the independent variables caused a change in rating score between the eight groups. Results revealed that social distance took precedence over temporal distance, but temporal distance played a more significant role in the far social distance conditions. A discussion of the results investigates the meaning of the data analysis, considers possible sources of error, and provides suggestions for future research.
