This study measured the effects of the iPad application entitled Vocabulary Central Grade 6 on vocabulary and comprehension reading skills of 44 sixth-graders. It also evaluated the perceptions of sixth-grade students using the iPad application. Instruments used included pre and post student surveys, iPad logs to assess how well students did on the application, Northwest Evaluation Association scores, and individual weekly reading curricula tests to evaluate success in vocabulary and comprehension. Independent-sample t tests were used to compare outcomes of the students in the experimental and control groups. The results of this study revealed no significant gain in vocabulary knowledge to improve comprehension by using the iPad application Vocabulary Central Grade 6. The results do show student interests in using an iPad to study vocabulary, but more research needs to be conducted. These results indicate the need for further study concerning the merit of using iPads in the classroom to improve learning.
