Thesis (Psy.D.)--California Institute of Integral Studies, 2009.
Despite a long running fascination with the creative arts by the psychoanalytic community, the structure of and dynamic within the creative process itself continues to elude categorization in analytic terms. With a grounding in the object relational theories of D. W. Winnicott (1958, 1971c) and Marion Milner (1987d), and utilizing the theoretical advancements of intersubjectivity and infant-parent research, this dissertation sets out to describe the mercurial and mysterious area of the human experience that is the creative process. Using the relationship between the artist and her medium as the focus of investigation, the author shows the progression of the creative process and how the artist uses environment and medium to access and effect change in the object relational dynamics of her internal world.

Bridging the gap between the worlds of the aesthetic and the intellectual are the work and the words of renowned artist, Louise Bourgeois. Describing her own creative process, Bourgeois's artful and insightful expressions provide an experiential foundation for, as well as an illustration of, the theoretical understanding of creativity as it is laid out in this investigation.

Ultimately, an intersubjective theory of the creative process is achieved by interweaving the elements of Winnicott's (1971c) capacity to be alone, transitional objects and potential space, Milner's (1987d) framed gap and illusion in symbol formation, Jessica Benjamin's (1988, 1990) concept of mutual recognition, and the findings of Beatrice Beebe's infant-parent cohort (Beebe & Lachmann, 1988, 1998; Beebe, Koblauch, Rustin, & Sorter, 2005). Finally, Thomas Ogden's (1999) analytic third is employed to highlight the clinical implications of such an intersubjective theory of creativity and the parallels it has with the psychotherapy process. Further areas of study are suggested with special emphasis on the concept of the therapist as medium.
