THE PROBLEM. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between the knowledge competencies and the job tasks among Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) who are working with the senior population in the State of California by asking the following questions: (1) To what extent are CTRS using the principle of group interaction, leadership, and safety while working with seniors? (2) To what extent are CTRS offering a diverse selection of recreation and leisure activities to the senior population? (3) To what extent are CTRS using appropriate program design by having specific goals and objectives in each therapeutic activity with seniors? (4) To what extent is a higher education Therapeutic Recreation internship important in enhancing the CTRS ability to working with the senior population?

METHOD. An online questionnaire was used to collect responses from CTRS respondents. The questionnaire consisted of 27 items that employed a Likert scale format. The questionnaire collected respondent's background information and their knowledge competencies that relate to the job tasks in his or her daily practice with seniors.

RESULTS. The results in this study suggest that (1) CTRS are using the principle on group interaction, leadership, and safety but strongly disagree in using laissez faire type leadership while working with seniors, (2) CTRS are offering a diverse selection of recreation and leisure activities to the senior population especially in physical activities, (3) CTRS are using appropriate program design by having specific goals and objectives in each therapeutic activity with seniors, and (4) higher education therapeutic recreation internship is important in enhancing the CTRS ability to work with the senior population.
