Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 1997.
This dissertation investigates the effects of goals and attribute interrelationships in choice processing. In the research on multiattribute choice behavior, a distinction exists between two types of choice processes: integration and comparison. The former refers to processing in which information from different attributes is combined, while the latter refers to the process in which different attributes are compared. It is argued that in a goal-based choice setting, choice goals direct searches for goal-relevant attribute information. The goal-relevant information is then integrated to create abstract representations pertaining to the goals. In the four experiments reported here, a process tracing methodology called "Mouselab" is used to test experimental hypotheses.

The results of Experiment 1 showed that integration occurred more often when attributes were goal-relevant, and when scales on which attribute values were measured were common. Experiment 2 was an extension of Experiment 1. The results of Experiment 2 showed that integration occurred more often when scales were common, and when the number of goal-relevant attributes increased. Experiment 3 employed multiple goals. It was shown that there was more integration when both the number of goal and the goal cluster size increased. The results of Experiment 3 ruled out the alternative filtering hypothesis that could potentially explain the patterns of data obtained in Experiments 1 and 2. Finally, Experiment 4 tested the effects of scale compatibility on integration. It was found that with numeric scales, more integration was observed when scales were compatible than when scales were incompatible.

In sum, the experimental results supported the main hypotheses of the dissertation. In the final chapter, the implication of the present findings on value trade-offs was discussed, along with discussions of the limitations of the present work and future directions of research.
