Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2013.
John Maxwell once wrote, "True leadership cannot be awarded, appointed, or assigned. It comes only from influence, and that cannot be mandated. It must be earned. The only thing a title can buy is a little time-either to increase your level of influence with others or to undermine it." There is a plethora of theories and models available to today's leaders. Several authors have written extensively on the subject and many organizations have adapted various concepts of leadership practices in efforts to increase productivity in their fields. In the evolution of school reform, the 2001, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act has created a unique and complex mission for educational leaders across America. Superintendents and principals are constantly replaced across the country because some believe that failing schools automatically correlates to incompetent leadership. This study will examine and analyze selected interchangeable corporate and educational leadership skills and practices that would be highly effective in creating an educational leadership model that would improve student achievement in secondary schools for the twenty-first century. This study identifies entrepreneurial characteristics exhibited by Fortune 500 companies that are compatible to educational leadership. Corporate leadership skills and practices identified and found appropriate for this study were adapted from a 2001 study conducted by Collins entitled, "Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't.".
