The primary purpose of this historical study is to reclaim Dr. Laura Zirbes' contributions to the field of education. Her contributions were all but ignored by her colleagues during her career and she continues to be disregarded by contemporary scholars. This study, which draws upon her numerous publications and speeches, as well as pertinent archival information, delves into the insights this female scholar had into a variety of theoretical issues related to education, the relationship between theory and teaching practice and the role of scholarly activity in the education of young people in our society. Zirbes' eventful and prodigious career began in 1903 after she graduated from the Cleveland Normal Training School as an elementary teacher. She taught elementary school for 17 years until 1920. While teaching fourth grade she wrote two articles that were eventually published in The Elementary School Journal in 1918 and 1919. These articles helped earn her recognition from the prestigious Teachers College, Lincoln School and in 1920 she was invited to become part of the staff as an investigator in reading.

In addition to her experimental work in reading she enrolled in and received her Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University. Upon graduation with her Ph.D. in 1928 she was recruited by The Ohio State University and became the first woman and permanent professor in elementary education. She remained at OSU until her retirement in 1954, however, she remained professionally active until her death in 1967.

This study also provides needed commentary into the implications of Dr. Zirbes' work for those working as teachers and/or scholars in teacher education and elementary education. It illuminates the social and historical context that provides insight into the forces behind the emergence of the "progressive education movement." As such, Laura Zirbes' contributions provide a more comprehensive understanding of this important development in American education.
