The Hockey Hall of Fame's commemorations and celebrations do not just recognize athletic achievement. The museum, rather, is a locus of commemoration that reflects broader issues in which various groups and individuals have contested to have their interests included in the shrine's increasingly diverse narrative of hockey's history. While the institution's mandate strives to honor hockey's greatest individuals, issues of regional tensions, national pride, accepted morality standards, and international politics have emerged as factors in creating memory. These complex tensions, along with the museum's selections and exhibits, illustrate how the Hockey Hall of Fame's aspirations have been challenged as the shrine strives to commemorate the game of hockey, Canada, and individuals.

By using a singular organization as the pulse of a community, a unique perspective of the interactions between multiple dimensions of society can be revealed, which then enlightens how these interests have influenced the Hockey Hall of Fame's leaders' efforts. The relationships between ethnic pride, acceptable behavior, and nationalism provide a valuable contribution not just to sports history, but also for Canadian history as well as international, cultural, ethnic, and social relations. As these external influences impact the Hockey Hall of Fame's selections and exhibits, the implications for public history showcase how diverse communities have contested to have their voice and interest included in the shrine's didactic narrative.
