Thesis (Ed.D.)--Walden University, 2013.
Government reports have shown that in the United States, 17% of children and youth are overweight or obese. As a result, many suffer from diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and the initial stages of heart disease; in addition, obese children may not perform optimally in school. Studies suggest that the primary causes of overweight/obesity among children and youth is lack of exercise and poor nutrition. This qualitative case study, conducted at a northeastern urban middle school where 26.11% of students are obese, explored the implementation of the school district's Local Wellness Policy (LWP). The policy was designed in part to help reduce obesity among students. The research questions addressed how the study school is implementing the district's LWP and staff perceptions of its effectiveness. Eight staff members, representative of recommended LWP advisory committee membership and of teaching faculty, were interviewed; transcripts of the interviews were coded and analyzed using the interpretive analysis model. Analysis revealed that the faculty and staff perceived that the LWP implementation was not effective, and that faculty and staff were aware of the relationship between wellness and learning. A number of themes were revealed including faculty incorporation of wellness into their classroom activities, and faculty and staff modeling of unhealthy behaviors to students. Interpretation of the results was informed by ecological and health promotion theories. The results led to a list of recommendations for the study school and the school district. The implementation of these recommendations could have an impact on social change by promoting students' wellness, leading to improved student academic achievement.
