The production and consumption of products is the driving force of the economy in the U.S. A review of economic figures from numerous government departments, most specifically the Bureau of Economic Activity, show that the driving force of consumption has many explainable phenomena that can be both positive as well as destructive. Because of an increased awareness of the impact of human activity on the environment, current patterns of consumption are now being scrutinized from the standpoint of sustainability. Design paradigms such as planned obsolescence have led to increases in public consumption and these have resulted in higher disposal rates for end-of-life products, with detrimental effects on the environment. In the future, sustainability considerations will have to be given primacy while still allowing for the production of goods in order to maintain economic growth in the U.S. In this paper, a model for determining the best options for recovery of a product considering end-of-life processes, such as reuse, reassembly, and recycling . These processes offer an economical alternate to the disposal of products, to support a sustainable pattern of consumption. A producer can influence the disposal of a product by changing some of the characteristics of the product as defined in this paper. The use of this model with long range and short range options available to a planner are illustrated. The model is then adapted for a theoretical case study using the short range version to demonstrate how the model can be used.
