This auto-ethnographic case study is an exploration of the role of indigenous and Mexican literatures in the educational experience of Mexican workers in the United States. More specifically, it is a case study of a pilot indigenous literatures reading group at a Day Labor Center in Southern California. The study addresses the question of how indigenous literatures can be used as a pedagogic tool to motivate marginalized workers to increase their literacy while they develop a stronger sense of their social identity and human potential. The study illustrates qualitatively the correlation between the motivation to learn and the exploration and development of a robust social identity. Selected indigenous works from the Nahuatl and Quiche traditions were analyzed for their educational relevance and to promote narrative discourses among participating students. Theories of adult education as well as critical pedagogy approaches were used to assess the educational value of indigenous literature within a context of a decolonizing framework. Narrative fieldwork was conducted and a thematic approach was utilized to analyze the narratives collected from immigrant members of a reading group consisting of immigrant workers with varying degrees of formal and non-formal education who came to the United States from various regions and cultural traditions in Mexico and Central America. Pedagogical and research recommendations were crafted that hopefully will help educators and policy makers to address the problem of the loss of indigenous knowledge and cultural identity among different sectors of the Mexican population living in the United States. The researcher sees this loss as critical to Mexican cultural identity and argues that it leaves a gap in the historical consciousness of Mexican/Central American immigrants and to a concomitant decline in self-esteem and a healthy sense of self, which in turn can lead to an increase in mental and social pathologies.
