Background. Maori adolescents, indigenous to New Zealand (NZ), have among the highest rates of depression and suicide in the industrialized world. Fortunately, resilience research demonstrates that promotive factors, such as family and school connections, can markedly reduce mental health problems for vulnerable youth populations. However, to date, this research has never focused on risk and promotive mechanisms related to mental health outcomes for Maori youth. Such knowledge is a prerequisite for addressing the persistent mental health inequities faced by Maori young people.

Objectives. (1) Develop culturally-relevant measures of family and school promotive factors, (2) Describe promotive and risk factors associated with depressive symptoms and suicide attempts, (3) Explore the moderating effects of significant promotive factors on relationships between depressive symptoms and suicide attempts, (4) Test the potential pathways by which significant promotive factors mediate the relationship between depressive symptoms and suicide attempts.

Results. Multivariate risk factors for serious depressive symptoms are: female gender, anxiety, being bullied weekly, changing residence frequently, sexual abuse, friend or family member commit suicide, witnessing physical violence in the home. Family connection and school connection were promotive resources for reducing depressive symptoms. Multivariate risk factors suicide attempt in the past year are: younger age, anxiety, depressive symptoms, having a close friend or family member commit suicide, witnessing physical violence in the home, and being uncomfortable in Pakeha (NZ European) social surroundings. Family connection is a promotive resource reducing the risk of a suicide attempt. Family connection does not moderate the relationship between depressive symptoms and suicide attempt, rather family connection appears to mediate the relationship between depressive symptoms and suicide attempt.

Conclusions. Maori youth report high rates of depressive symptoms and suicide attempts. Reducing exposure to family violence, bullying and racism are important public health measures to reducing mental illness. Effective assessment and treatment of depression are vital strategies to prevent depressive symptoms and suicide attempts. Family connection is a potent promotive factor that may mediate the risk between depressive symptoms and suicide attempts for Maori youth.
