Bullying is a large scale social problem impacting educational systems nationwide, and has been linked to negative outcomes for both bullies and targets. Bullying has become more highly technological and is most often referred to as cyber bullying. Bullies have begun to use the internet, social networking sites, e-mail, instant messaging (IM), text messaging, and phone calls on cellular phones, in addition to traditional face-to-face bullying. This research studied the direct impact of cyber bullying on the educational system, specifically on student discipline, academic success, activity participation rates, and gender. The Cyber Bullying Questionnaire was administered to male and female middle school students, between the ages of 11 and 14, in the spring of 2010 and fall of 2011 with a desired sample size of N = 74. Data was evaluated using multiple regression to compare cyber bully status to discipline referral rate, grade point average GPA, and extracurricular participation. A chi square test of independence was used to evaluate whether or not gender is related to cyber bullying. Educational implications will be discussed.
