Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Mexico State University, 2013.
This inductive study examines blended value creation in for-profit social enterprises (FPSEs). While FPSEs are increasingly being recognized for their role in societal and business progress, limited scholarly research exists on how these enterprises create value. FPSEs encounter additional business pressures relative to conventional enterprises due to their hybrid nature, which places social value creation on par with financial value creation. FPSEs' success partly depends upon the effective management of these dual objectives, and this research explores how their co-presence affects FPSEs' value creation process. This research is framed by the questions, "How do FPSEs create blended value?" and "How does the co-presence of equally salient social and financial objectives affect FPSEs' in their value creation efforts?" The data comprise of material gathered from semi-structured interviews with the founders and executives of eight FPSEs, and from publicly available archival data.

Analysis yielded five dimensions that interrelate in the FPSEs' value creation efforts: Entrepreneur Influence; Initial Identity Formation; Developing the Hybrid Business Model; Balancing Social-Financial Concerns; and Consumer-Partner Development. These dimensions encompass fifteen second-order themes, which provide insights in to FPSE development and operation. The research indicates that, in the process of value creation, FPSEs balance their dual aims through the interplay of organizational identity, organizational image and reputation. The findings provide social entrepreneurs with insights into managing dual aims and indicate avenues for future scholarly research including a deeper examination of organizational identity issues and an exploration of the consumer-social enterprise interface.
