Although there is a wealth of research documenting the benefits of social participation for health, few studies have extended their consideration beyond the most proximate influences on the relationship. Integrating the life course perspective into the study of social participation and health would highlight how the more proximate indicators of social participation are actually a culmination of a lifetime of exposure to various social circumstances. Using theoretical insights from life course perspective; this project aims to provide a more detailed understanding of the mechanisms that influence social participation and its association with health among older Europeans. In two empirical papers this dissertation uses a large, multinational, panel survey of older adults in Europe to directly address how social circumstances early in life shape social participation and the relationship between social participation and health in later life. The first study (Chapter 2) finds that the social environment in childhood shapes social participation in later life through the transmission of cultural capital. Parents transmit social values consistent with their own social status to their children, which both directly socializes children into participation and indirectly socializes them through an emphasis on education. Results from the second study (Chapter 3) indicate that early childhood conditions influence the relationship between social participation and health through a process of cumulative advantage. Early life advantage shapes opportunities and access to achievement (education) across the life course. Once childhood advantage is there is no longer a significant benefit of social participation for health. Additionally, findings show that the relationship between social participation and health is not a result of health selection earlier in the life course, but rather a process of accumulating advantages across the life course that translate into better health.
