Thesis (M.A.)--Western Illinois University, 2013.
This study discusses the relationship between Social Capital and Economic Development in the rural Illinois village of Martinsville. The two research questions that are asked include, "What demographic variables affect participation in community activities in Martinsville?" and "Does Social Capital appear to be influenced by Community Commitment?" The study supports the initial hypotheses and finds that demographic variables such as age, income, ethnicity, and others do not have an effect on participation in community activities. Additionally, it finds that Social Capital has a positive relationship with Community Commitment. Finally, the study gives practical recommendations to the Martinsville community regarding the way forward for further accomplishment of their development goals.
