This study examines online video game walkthroughs as a genre. I sought to answer two questions: (1) what is the rhetorical exigence from which walkthroughs spring, and (2) what purpose for player-readers or -writers or the gaming community do walkthroughs serve. I hypothesize that walkthroughs serve two purposes: (1) they provide a tutorial through video games for player-readers, and (2) they improve player relations between player-readers and -writers. Using a genre analysis, I concluded that walkthroughs adhere to several generic conventions; walkthroughs share exigence, content, style, form, evolution, and audiences. The interviews I conducted clarified players' use, perceptions and assessments of walkthroughs, which are generally positive. Additionally, these walkthroughs are expanding the boundaries of professional writing, allowing non-professionals to write instructional texts. Finally, walkthroughs are expanding the boundaries of what is considered professional writing, in that these non-professionally written pieces could be a path to professional writing.
