An Analysis of Rhetorical Text and Design in Selected Twentieth-Century American Recipes reports on research and identifies how document design is used to explain recipes to home cooks. Selected print cookbooks illustrate how authors apply unique approaches to distinguish their method of instruction from others. Recipes provide examples of how visual and textual elements work together to attract various audiences and persuade, instruct, inspire, and even change attitudes about cooking. Visual rhetoric is analyzed to demonstrate the aesthetic appeal and instructional benefits that images and complementary text provide. Writing strategies, instructional models, and language are examined to show how recipe writers facilitate understanding and learning for target audiences.
