Thesis (Psy.D.)--Widener University, Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology, 2001.
Acquisition of language and communication is a major challenge faced by children with autism. The pervasive use of computers in education, however, has brought new opportunities for learning and intervention to children with this diagnosis. Beginning with a description of the common language characteristics of children with autism and then drawing support from the research on language intervention approaches and computer-assisted instruction, this author demonstrates the potential of one type of computer software (the interactive storybook) to increase language skills in children with autism. A brief case example is also provided to demonstrate how this software might be adapted by therapists to address the language deficits of these children.
