Thesis (Ph.D.)--Saint Louis University, 2013.
Purpose Throughout the years many scholars grappled with the perennially pressing question about the use of the mother tongue (MT) in the English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom. The studies, however, which venture into identifying the student voice, are rather circumscribed as most of them investigated it from the teachers' perspective. This is, precisely, the discrepancy that this study attempted to redress focusing on the way students feel about the issue as it inclusively focuses on their point of views.

Methods Two C Gymnasium classes from three public schools situated in three different locations across the city of Limassol drew the non-random sample of this study. The six classes were observed in five different periods of an entire academic year while forty-five students of these classes were individually interviewed.

Findings The results of this study challenge one of the widely held assumptions in EFL classrooms: namely, the idea that students want the MT to be used as little as possible. Students acknowledged that they cannot extricate themselves from its use in the classroom with forty-two students embracing the benefits reaped from its presence. Of note is that even the three students who stated a preference for an all-TL (Target Language) learning environment did not disavow its significance. Yet, despite the general favorable consensus surrounding its use, they also pinpointed the need for increasing their TL input without, however, circumventing MT use.

Students were relatively accurate to their reporting of the L1. They appeared, however, uncomfortable and reticent using the L2 in class. What lay at the root of the problem was the feeling of classroom anxiety that governed their behaviors.

Implications As a result, the study suggested embracing creative MT approaches that could contribute to the optimization of the learning experience. This could be effectuated through the organization of training sessions with the assistance of the Ministry of Education, Cyprus which could inculcate in teachers methods about how the MT could meritoriously and resourcefully be used. The study also suggested incorporating tasks that strive towards boosting the students' confidence in an attempt to create a stress-free learning environment.
