Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2013.
The purpose of the qualitative study was to identify, understand, and describe specific characteristics, namely knowledge and education, prior business experience, mentoring, and risk-tolerance levels that led to a successful business endeavor during the first 5 years of business startup and beyond for entrepreneurs in southwest Louisiana. A phenomenological approach was used. Sixteen participants were interviewed. From the analysis of the results of the study, several conclusions were drawn. Knowledge and education had a positive impact on the entrepreneurs. The participants discussed that knowledge and education should be looked upon as a continuous progression to enhance entrepreneurial efforts regularly. The experience the participants had before the entrepreneurial journey was important and entrepreneurs used the prior experience to assist them in making better decisions based on situations that occurred previously. The participants in the study indicated that mentoring was important; however, family and close friends were preferred as mentors versus formal mentors. The most important factor of the entrepreneurial journey was having a support system in place, which stemmed mainly from family and friends that were considered mentors as well. The risk tolerance level of the entrepreneurs was a constant factor that often plagued entrepreneurs. However, the more information, education, knowledge, experience, and understanding the entrepreneurs had, they were better able to lessen the risks for the business.
