Thesis (D.Miss.)--School of Intercultural Studies, Biola University, 2012.
The Korean students in the Biola English Language Studies Program (ELSP) want to finish their English courses as quickly as possible and start taking courses in their degree programs. Many Korean students finish successfully in a short time. However, some struggle through the program, some repeat the same class, and some leave the program without completing. The success of ELSP at Biola University is crucial in order to satisfy Korean students who have made a life altering decision to study overseas, after resigning from jobs and investing their precious time and funds. The purpose of this study is to explain the key factors affecting the success of Korean students in ELSP at Biola University.

Grounded theory methods and procedures have been used in this study to explain the key factors affecting the success of Korean students in ELSP. In order to find the key factors contributing to the success of Korean students in ELSP, the researcher conducted interviews of enrolled students in ELSP. Fifteen Korean ELSP students from South Korea were interviewed. Their experiences at ELSP were similar, but varied depending on their situation. Participants were asked open-ended questions about their experience with ELSP and about their backgrounds.

Three themes emerged through careful analysis of the data: initial adaptation including placement, language learning approach, and support clusters (emotional, psychological, spiritual, and financial). These themes appear to reflect the key factors contributing to the success of Korean students in ELSP at Biola University.
