In this dissertation we have theoretically investigated the transient dynamics of a low-dimensional nanostructure under the presence of electronic transport. In such an open quantum system, where the number of particles is not conserved, the natural function space for the system is given by the many-body Fock space. A detailed investigation of the non-Markovian dynamics, reveals that in general the evolution of the occupation probabilities of the many-particle states depends on the single-particle Hilbert space of the system, but not on its entire Fock space. This implies that in the particle number basis, higher order contributions to the quantum coherence of the system (Fock-coherence) will evolve independently than the lowest order contributions (Hilbert-coherence), and under certain energy and coupling configurations will have significantly larger decoherence times. We have found that a resonant regime in the Fock-coherence is possible where the decoherence time is extended indefinitely even in the presence of a boson-mediated relaxation. Although a Hilbert-coherence in the system does not exhibit resonant behaviour, we find a regime where the Hilbert space decoherence time can be extended considerably by appropriate system configurations. Our results also show that the Markov limit is only valid within the steady state regime, and should not be considered to obtain the threshold from transient to steady-state. Results for the transient currents are obtained and we find the current characteristics through the confining barriers to contain detailed information on the phase coherence and degree of state mixture in the system. Therefore, a mapping from these experimentally relevant current characteristics to the coherence of a system may be possible.
