As a social media, the internet has expanded towards many aspects of our lives, among them are changes to the way we communicate and interact with others. One such social media that has created a culture of its own is online gaming. This study analyzed players in the online game of World of Warcraft through their interactions and their construction of self within the game. In-depth interviews were used to understand how players perceived themselves online and how that may have affected perceptions of themselves in real life. Goffman's Dramaturgical approach was the structural framework in which this study was based on and how the self is constructed in the virtual front stage. This study found that players construct the self through the rewards provided in game and the interaction with larger groups. Players get a sense of pride in their in-game accomplishments and they become more involved when others are looking to them to fulfill responsibilities within group play. The game provides a place of meaning and purpose through a sense of importance in their roles and the social approval they receive from peers. To these players the game is more than a source of entertainment, but a unique place of expression through their interaction with others and being able to build and manipulate a self.
