Asian Americans are disproportionally underrepresented in senior library leadership positions in academic libraries in the United States. In order to understand the root causes of this phenomenon and to explore what can be done to increase the representation of the Asian Americans in library leadership positions, two surveys were conducted: The Asian American Library Leader Survey and the New Asian American Librarian Survey. The Asian American Library Leader Survey dealt with the barriers they faced and the strategies utilized to overcome them in their leadership advancement paths. The New Asian American Librarian Survey explored new librarians' leadership aspirations. Based on the results of these two surveys, the available literature, and personal experience, this Executive Position Paper (EPP), while recognizing that external forces, such as racism, stereotypes, glass ceiling are among the major contributing factors to the under-representation of the Asian Americans in library leadership positions in academic libraries, believes that internal forces, such as Asian American cultural values (e.g., unassertive, conflict aversion, risk avoidance), different communication styles, etc., might be as powerful as the external forces in impeding the Asian Americans from preparing and attaining library leadership positions in academic libraries. This EPP takes the position that aspiring Asian American academic librarians must take the initiative in creating pathway to leadership. To support aspiring Asian American academic librarians this EPP sets forth a series of recommendations for action.
