Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Idaho, 2013.
This paper investigates secessionist conflicts that occurred in Kazakhstan, Moldova, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Each of these states contains mature separatist movements, several of which have achieved the status of what can be called a semi-sovereign entity. All six separatist movements wanted to achieve independence. Transnistria, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia achieved full secession, the Karabakh Republic and Adjara achieved a partial secession, while Ust-Kamenogorsk failed to achieve a successful secession. I answer the following question: what influenced the outcome of secessionist conflict in these cases?
