Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2013.
This dissertation seeks to develop a methodology for connecting Johan Huizinga's theory of play to the work experiences of professional musicians. There is a need for a new methodology for musical understanding that directly connects what is present in the score with the action that is making music, the "spontaneous creation" of musical play. Drawing heavily from the work of Huizinga, Roger Caillios, Stephen Nachmanovitch, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Howard Gardner, David Elliott, Thomas S. Henricks, Vernon A. Howard, and Murphey Garrett Pound, this dissertation introduces a new methodology for considering music, and suggests both theoretical and practical applications of play for music analysis, pedagogy, practice, and performance.

In order to show the link between play and music in both theoretical and practical use, this project introduces and employs a new analytical method that reveals elements of play latent in a music composition that are available for realization in live performance. The method examines Huizinga's "elements of play" through poetic and musical definitions, drawing from the work of Terry Eagleton to guide text analysis. An application of Huizinga's theory of play to David Del Tredici's Miz Inez Sez shows how applying play to music can illuminate aspects of a score and therefore generate ideas about interpreting its form and meaning.

Finally, the dissertation explores the implications of applying concepts of play, especially its specialized notion of competition, to music pedagogy, practice, and performance. In particular, it studies how competition can be consciously exploited in the work experiences of musicians to make this work more effective and enjoyable. Ways that musicians inadvertently limit their own play experiences through negative habits and thought processes are explored, and in response to this, the thesis suggests concrete ways play can be used to correct unhealthy mental attitudes and enhance potential. The thesis also examines the ways competitive, playful music performance can be a deeply humanizing experience for performers and their audiences.
