Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2012.
The advantage of new asset management technology in various sectors has been the subject of considerable research over the past two decades. Empirical evidence has shown that radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is effective and more cost efficient than traditional supply management systems in the areas of asset protection and inventory management. Currently, the use of RFID systems has not been broadly adopted in academic environments due to the high cost of deployment and integration. This study has investigated the potential impact of RFID systems in order to inform academic decision makers who may consider whether to adopt this technology. Throughout this quantitative study, a brief history of RFID systems reviewed the cost-benefit ratio of such a system in conjunction with the feasibility of integrating it into existing inventory management processes in academia. In addition, the study provided a survey instrument to a population of more than 350 managers and supervisors at New York City College of Technology. The results can help inform the decision-making process for future possible RFID adoption in academia. The outcome of this research can also assist prospective researchers in conducting additional pilot studies that, hopefully, will help determine whether the utilization of RFID technologies can be fruitfully applied to supply chain management outside of academia.
