This study was initially grounded in the need to tell the story of the made-in Venezuela Sistema, a story to which I am culturally connected. As research began, though, I found in Play on, Philly inherent qualities that suggested that, along with its relation with Venezuela, the Philadelphia program has unique cultural characteristics. Culture, then, plays an essential role in this study. On the one hand, a cultural connection drove my interest to begin the study, and on the other hand, Play on, Philly's cultural characteristics illustrated that I could reach more comprehensive results with my in-depth immersion. The ethnographic work allowed me to explore two cultural realities, the one I carry and the one I found in the classical music classrooms of PoP. Understanding the interplay between these two cultures responds to the idea of El Sistema being transferrable. I was after a place/space that embodied social performance, culture, and communication. Once I found it, I never left.
