Thesis (M.S.E.)--Southwest Minnesota State University, 2013.
This action research project investigates whether there is a significant difference in academic achievement between those who participate in musical activities and those who do not. The study also researches if music in the classroom has an effect on math anxiety and mathematical achievement. The study was conducted at a small rural school in central Minnesota during the 2012/2013 school year. The demographics of the study consisted of Advanced Algebra II students, 15 males and 11 females in the control group, and 10 males and 14 females in the experimental group, all Caucasian. A presurvey, math anxiety survey, and postsurvey were administered to collect initial and final data. Each student's math grade, test grades, and GPA score were analyzed. The analysis of the data consisted of descriptive statistics and independent sample t tests. The findings of this study showed no significant difference between the musical and nonmusical groups. Yet the descriptive statistics show a slight positive change toward the use of music in a mathematics classroom. The attitudes of the students favor the use of music in the classroom. The results of this study can assist in the supporting of music programs in school districts and the use of music in a classroom to assist in managing and focusing the students on the subject.
