This thesis applies the concept of a design life cycle, which is developed in this paper, to eighteenth-century English porcelain through an examination of its design, consumption, and use. This paper argues that an amalgamated analysis is necessary for a comprehensive understanding of eighteenth-century porcelain because of the objects' ambiguity between being a decorative and utilitarian object as a result of its many functions and uses. This paper builds on recent research that highlights the importance of porcelain vessels in all facets of eighteenth-century life but differentiates itself by focusing on the gendered aspects of these objects and how design, consumption, and use were mutually influential and integral to the gendering that porcelain undergoes in the eighteenth century. It concludes that the design life cycle makes clear the significance of porcelain in women's activities and illuminates the ways in which women gained agency through the multitudinous applications of porcelain vessels.
